Countless people have influenced the course of my life and touched and shaped the person that I am now. Many of them are not part of my life any more, but that hasn’t changed the admiration, the gratitude and the respect that I still feel for them after all these years.
I would like to present them and share with you all the wonderful and unforgettable things that they left behind, some after only a few hours, some after a longer period of time.
I have often compared myself to a sponge which gets to absorb so much of the world around it and I feel that I have always been able to absorb everything I see, I feel and that I am a part of.
This allows me to hold on to what and to who matters the most to me for a very long time and it allows me to never forget them.
While I wrote something similar on my site, on a page where I mentioned all the people that I love and that have inspired me thoughout my life, this time, I would like to mention people that, some in the course of only few hours and some in the course of months and years, have touched me deeply and that have been able to leave behind an unforgettable memory…a memory that will never fade.
The gratitude and the admiration that I feel for them will never come to an end…I feel that they are all precious and that they deserve to be kept in my heart forever!
Here they are:
Alexandra and Michelle Powe, two sisters that took the time to get to know me and that taught me precious lessons about this country.
I met Alexandra in Lake Placid, back in 1994. She was walking down the street and she stopped me and asked me directions to the Olympic Complex. I will always remember how nice it was to hear that she thought I was American, that I looked like I belonged there and that my English had a very nice accent! From that moment on, we became friends and we kept in touch throughout the years. Alex is a wonderful writer that inspires others with her books and with her work and Michelle is a strong woman that welcomes others with her open, trusting and caring heart.
Rick Sharp, from Texas, a very kind man that inspired me to see life as a chess game, that kept in touch by writing wonderful letters and that taught me a lot about the life of a cowboy!
Michael Barrett, a police detective in Connecticut, a man that helped me live through a very scary period of my life and that found the time to care about me and give me useful advice.
Ricardo Bermudez, from Costa Rica, a dear man that respected me, that took me in consideration, that had the most wonderful way of listening to my dream stories and that was there for me at every step of my American beginning.
A kind, homeless, African American man that lived in the streets of Norwalk and that I dedicated a summer afternoon to back in 1994. He talked to me and he shared his views on life. What touched me the most was the happiness that he showed me in everything he did and in everything he talked about. His spirit was cheerful and funny. I treasure the conversation we shared because I felt that he was a great example of how it’s possible to live accepting a simple life and an uncertain future.
Special Strangers that I will never forget...
