The BNAC is located in the Jacobs Neurological Institute (JNI) at Buffalo General Hospital, part of the University at Buffalo and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo, NY, USA.

The BNAC strives to extend the boundaries of current knowledge about neurological diseases and disorders through innovative research techniques and the application of bioinformatics resources.

The Buffalo Neuroimaging Analysis Center (BNAC) was founded in October of 2000 by Dr. Rohit Bakshi. Using seed monies granted by the University of Buffalo, National Institutes of Health, and the Cummings Foundation, Dr. Bakshi established a quantitative research center with the goal of studying MRI metrics of neurological diseases which could one day lead to a better understanding of neurological diseases and the development of new therapies.

With the aid of talented researchers like Dr. Robert Bermel, Dr. Jitendra Sharma, Dr. Andrew Fabiano, Dr. Michael Sanfilipo, and Dr. Christopher Tjoa, the BNAC was able to take its first steps towards acquiring the computational infrastructure required to broaden the horizons of quantitative medical imaging. Due to their efforts and those of additional creative researchers who joined the team, the BNAC grew quickly in its initial years.

In early 2003, Dr. Zivadinov joined the BNAC as Associate Director, bringing considerable expertise and vision to the BNAC. By September of that-year, Dr. Zivadinov had assumed the role of BNAC Director, when Dr. Bakshi accepted a new position at Harvard Medical School.

The day to day operation of the BNAC changed permanently when the innovative Quantitative MRI (QMRI) reporting program was launched. The program began with the goal of providing area clinicians with the same tools to monitor patient disease and treatment effects as those used by top researchers in the field. The BNAC provides quantitative patient metrics to supplement radiology reports for all neurological cases undergoing MRI. Although the Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Report (QMRIR) is the cornerstone and strength of its activities, the BNAC is exploring the expansion of its capabilities into other areas of research such as correlation studies with other biomarkers.
